Inner Compass: Personal Development as a Foundation for Ethical Filmmaking
Workshop
This interactive workshop explores how personal development supports ethical and socially responsible filmmaking. Based on a curriculum developed at the Netherlands Film Academy, it includes reflective and embodied exercises to help students cultivate an inner compass, aligning creativity with empathy, integrity, and accountability.
The four-year program progresses from building trust and self-awareness in Year 1, to tools like the Crew Canvas, mindfulness (MBSR), non-violent communication, and intervision in Year 2, followed by tailored growth in Years 3 and 4. Themes include group dynamics, leadership, and workflow, preparing students for the professional field and real-world challenges.
In this session, educators will experience key exercises and receive practical tools to integrate into their teaching. The workshop demonstrates how personal growth fuels inclusive storytelling, effective collaboration, and responsible filmmaking, empowering future creatives to lead with courage and compassion.
Anna de Beus graduated from the Netherlands Film Academy in 2002 with a focus on Production Design. She worked in the art department and as a producer on various film and TV projects before founding an agency for screenwriters and directors. This sparked a passion for mentoring, leading her to become a certified coach and trainer for the creative industries. Anna now teaches personal development and social sustainability at the Film Academy. She co-founded CINEMIND with Rosan Boersma, an organization that offers coaching, training, and mediation across the Dutch film sector to support mental health, ethical leadership, and an inclusive creative practice.
