Teaching the Social Impact of Film through AI Hallucination
AI hallucination—the creation of false or fictional content—is often perceived negatively as a source of misinformation. However, in the field of education, it can become a valuable tool to provoke critical and ethical thinking. This presentation explores a pedagogical method that uses AI’s hallucinations to help students reflect on the social impact of cinema.
Examples include AI-generated distorted representations of disabled individuals, fabricated cinematic scenes, and narratives portraying human alienation by machines or AI. Students are encouraged to critically analyze these materials and examine their social and ethical implications. The presentation will be structured in three parts: a theoretical overview of AI hallucination, a case study of its lecture application, and a summary of student responses. This approach fosters media literacy and empowers future filmmakers to engage with society more consciously and responsibly.
By reinterpreting the concept of hallucination—traditionally seen in a negative light—as a pedagogical resource, this presentation proposes a new direction for film education. It enables students to evolve from passive consumers of media into active interpreters and creative agents. Through this process, they develop not only critical media literacy but also imaginative capacity to engage with complex social realities.
