SALAM, documentary feature directed by ECU’s graduate Agustina Willat García (Uruguay, 2024)
The Sahrawi people have lived in exile for almost half a century in the driest desert of the African continent. There, where basic resources such as water are scarce, there is a film school. As the world looks the other way, a group of young filmmakers carries out a battle against oblivion.
The Project was born from a cooperation between the Uruguayan Film School (ECU) and the Abidin Kaid Saleh film school located in the Sahrawi refugee camps in Algerian territory. It was shot in two phases, in 2017 and 2019, and finalized and released in 2024. Although Salam is an independent production, it was made with the support of both the Uruguayan Film School (ECU) and the Abidin Kaid Saleh film school of the Sahrawi Republic. Directed by Agustina Willat García (ECU’S graduate) and produced by Enrique Buchichio (ECU’s graduate and current Coordinator).
Enrique Buchichio graduated from the Uruguayan Film School (ECU) in 2004. He directed two feature films: Leo’s Room (2009), world premiere in the San Sebastian Film Festival, and Zanahoria / Behind the Truth (2014), Golden Colon for Best Film in the Iberoamerican Huelva Film Festival. He is the Coordinator of the Uruguayan Film School (ECU) since 2012. Founder of Asador Cine; producer of the documentary films Salam (2024) and Ponsonbyland (in postproduction).
